It’s not often that I see someone wearing American sports team clothing down here in Santiago. But, once in a while I do. And once in a while in that once in a while, it’s a fellow Philly phan. This past Sunday, I was coolin’ at the playground with Baby and Mrs. Phan and I see this guy wearing some sort of championship shirt. I can’t tell the team, but I can tell it’s the standard issue MLB World Series shirt where they just fill in the blank with the winning team.
Intrigued, I go in for a closer look in case it’s one of those 2008 issues and I can buy this guy a beer. But then, to my horror and dismay, I see this…
Needless to say, I threw up in my mouth a little bit. Not only was it a San Francisco Giants World Series Champions shirt, but it was a 2010 San Francisco Giants World Series Champions shirt. Seeing that just made me depressed for the rest of the day.
Now when I was a kid, I actually liked the Giants quite a bit. I was a big Will Clark fan and I hated the A’s when they played the Giants in the World Series. It really wasn’t until 2010 that I began to dislike them. When the Phillies were juggernauting their way through the regular season, I was convinced that they were going to win the World Series as long as they didn’t have to play the Giants. Sigh…
The younger version of me hated very few teams in all of sports. Aside from a few division rivals I was widely accepting of everyone else. I always rooted for the NL, NFC, and Eastern Conference in the NBA to win the championship. My hatred of other teams began in hockey and many times I rooted for the Campbell Conference thanks to the Penguins, Bruins, Devils, and Canadiens.
Hating a team for winning one series against my beloved Phillies may seem a bit strong. The truth is I’m a bad loser and poor sport. I hate plenty of teams for a variety of reasons. For instance, I hate the Green Bay Packers because they hurt Randall Cunningham in the first game of the season in 1991. I’ll forever believe that the Eagles would have won the Super Bowl that year if he didn’t get hurt in that game. So to hell with the Packers. I don’t even need a real reason to dislike a team. I hate the San Diego Padres because their uniforms are always ugly. That’s it. Well, that and in 2010 they couldn’t keep the Giants from getting into the playoffs. Hate them.
Now that I’m much older, I more or less hate almost all the teams for one reason or another. I’m actually happier that way in a sense. I don’t watch tons of games outside of the Philly teams. Now a lot of people say that I’m not a real fan of the 4 major sports because I’m not obsessed with watching every game. That’s probably true to a degree. I’m a phan of my team and if they don’t win the championship, then ph- whoever does. So a big Ph-U to the Giants for 2010 and everything else since. God Bless the Phillies and God Bless Philadelphia!
