With the Sixers season ending recently, the Flyers having been finished weeks ago, and the Phillies mired in an uninspired last place, we have officially entered The Doldrums. Unless the Phillies start playing the type of baseball that we’ve grown accustomed to soon, this will last until September, when the Eagles become our new hope at salvation.
Things haven’t been this bad for a while. Even though the Phillies have disappointed us the past few seasons, they made the summer exciting for several years now. The Flyers were in the Stanley Cup Finals two years ago and the Sixers…well were the Sixers. Philadelphia hasn’t had to go through a long, hot, dull summer since perhaps 2004. The Phillies finished a game out of the wild card in 2005, 3 out in 2006, and have been in the playoffs for 5 straight years.
The Phillies have spoiled us. Having to go through June, July, and August with only last place baseball to care about will be brutal. That’ll be great news for the Eagles, because people will be in a frenzy for them to start. I don’t know what’ll happen if they crap the bed again like last year. I’m usually an optimist when it comes to Philly sports. There’s still a ton of time left in the Phillies season and I still would like to think they’ll turn it around. There’s also 2 wild cards this year, so it’s entirely realistic for the Phillies to make the one game playoff with a 3rd place NL East finish. Who the hell knows, sigh. RIDE OR DIE!!
